Spring is arguably the best season of the year. The temperature is wonderful, the world is coming alive with color, and everything feels fresh and new. Humans aren’t the only ones who love spring though. This is the season when termite activity is at its peak. Is your home protected?
When are Termites Most Active?
Termites are active all twelve months of the year, but spring is an especially busy time for them. That’s because it is typically the time of year when they reproduce. Every termite in a colony has a specific job. There are worker termites, soldier termites, and reproductive termites, which are also called swarmers.
In the spring, reproductive termites come out of the ground in a big swarm. They find a mate within the group, shed their wings, and then head back underground to start a new colony as king and queen. This means that spring is not only the time of year when termite populations are most likely to grow, but it is also the time of year when the number of colonies grows.
What Happens if Termites Get Into Your Home?
Termites are silent, out-of-sight invaders that can live in your home for months or even years without being detected. But just because you don’t see or hear them doesn’t mean they’re not doing anything. The entire time they’re in your home, they eat away at the wooden structures within your walls and crawlspaces.
Over time, termite tunnels and nests will grow longer and larger until you begin to see the signs of termite damage. You may notice that your walls begin to bulge, your doors or windows won’t open or close properly, or your ceilings and floors start to sag. If left untreated for too long, termites can cause so much damage to your home that it is no longer structurally sound.
