Why Seeing Cockroaches In Your Home Is Bad News

2/12/2019

If you missed our blog on keeping American cockroaches out of your home this fall, it's okay, we are not too offended. Did the lack of prevention lead to an infestation this past fall? Autumn is a time of year that many insects are driven into our homes by the cold weather. Today, we're going to talk about some of the signs you'll see if cockroaches have invaded your home and why seeing cockroaches in your home is really bad news.

Subtle Signs

When a cockroach infestation begins, the signs are quite subtle. Roaches don't prefer to be seen and cockroaches are mostly nocturnal in nature, so you're not likely to see them crawling around inside your home. Here are a few signs that can alert you to their presence:

  • Odors: When cockroaches infest a home, they often create a smell that is very noticeable. This odor is hard to describe. If you're noticing a smell that you would describe as "unpleasant," it may be cockroaches. See if you can figure out where the smell is coming from. Cockroaches prefer moist areas. So an unpleasant or musty smell coming from under your sink could be a sign of a roach infestation.
  • Sounds: When cockroaches run around in your kitchen at night, you might hear them. The sound of their little legs hitting the hardwood, ceramic, granite, slate, porcelain or linoleum is faint but detectable.
  • Droppings: If you find tiny black droppings that look like pepper littered about underneath your kitchen sink or in food cabinets and storage areas, you definitely have a cockroach problem. You may also see these droppings on carpet edges or underneath cabinets that overhang your kitchen floor.
  • Eggs: When cockroaches leave their oothecae lying around, this can be a clear sign of infestation. Oothecae are sacks that hold several eggs and are large enough for you to see littered about in dark, humid areas.

Not-So-Subtle Signs

When you see a cockroach in your home, it is bad news. The visual sighting of cockroaches usually means that roach populations have exceeded the availability of food resources. That means you might have a lot of cockroaches in your home—a lot more than what would be expected from a fall invasion. It also could mean that you've had roaches for a very long period of time. Have you noticed an increase in sickness in your home? Sickness and cockroaches go hand to hand.
